On 12 July a satellite swung over the rolling deserts and oasis cities of China’s vast far west. It seems an unlikely place to start an investigation into one of the most pressing human rights concerns of our age. But less than three years later, on 22 April , a satellite photo of that same piece of desert showed something new. The first reports that China was operating a system of internment camps for Muslims in Xinjiang began to emerge last year. The satellite photograph was discovered by researchers looking for evidence of that system on the global mapping software, Google Earth. It places the site just outside the small town of Dabancheng, about an hour’s drive from the provincial capital, Urumqi. To try to avoid the suffocating police scrutiny that awaits every visiting journalist, we land at Urumqi airport in the early hours of the morning.
Having won the bid for the Olympic Winter Games on 31 July , Beijing is set to become the first city in the world to have hosted both the summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games. The events in seven Olympic winter sports will be held in the three competition zones of central Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. Yanqing, a suburban district of Beijing 80km to the northwest and home to the famous Badaling and Juyongguan stretches of the Great Wall, is to host the alpine skiing and sliding bobsleigh, skeleton and luge events.
Zhangjiakou, further to the northwest in the neighbouring Hebei province, will host all the other snow events snowboard, freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined and biathlon in its Chongli district, a popular skiing destination. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, to be completed by the end of , will cut travel time from Beijing to Yanqing to 20 minutes, and from Beijing to Zhangjiakou to 50 minutes.

Dirty air threatens the health of billions of city dwellers around the world. China’s megacities are among the worst, with concentrations of airborne pollutants 10— times higher than those in Europe or North America, and occasionally even 1, times higher. An estimated 2. Efforts to improve air quality are targeting only the tip of the iceberg. Cities such as Beijing routinely measure levels of particulate matter measuring 10 micrometres PM 10 and 2.
But urban air is a complex cocktail of chemicals whose poorly understood interactions and feedbacks may exacerbate health problems. Efforts to reduce one pollutant can have perverse effects on others as conditions change. The chemistry of China’s polluted urban air is unprecedented. Higher populations, heavier industries and modern goods manufacturing, as well as the climatic conditions, make Beijing’s smogs markedly different from the ‘pea soupers’ that afflicted London and other European cities 50 to years ago.
Many atmospheric processes are nonlinear — meaning that the relationship between cause and effect is not proportional. So we do not know and cannot predict which harmful compounds are being formed.

This article explores the linkages between domestic affairs and foreign policies in China in fulfilling its grand ambition of Belt and Road Initiative BRI. It also disentangles the intricate relations amongst the Party, the key decision-making institutions and the policy execution entities in determining the final outcome of the BRI. These concepts are deeply rooted in the Chinese political system, but encapsulated in simple and memorable slogans.
They have caused a great deal of both excitement and confusion abroad and within China. No other policy in the world has launched as many global debates, with both serious doubts and some enthusiasm seen from academics, policymakers and entrepreneurs.

The UK — China CEO Dialogue event introduces UK businesses seeking Chinese joint venture partners, investors or opportunities to export their goods and services to Chinese businesses hungry for brands that will succeed in China, the largest consumer market on earth. The meeting takes place in May at Stoke Park — the luxury Country Club and Hotel of family-owned International Group, which has hosted the event in conjunction with PwC since — and also in November in Beijing, where it is hosted by Mr Zhu Xinli, founder and Chairman of one of the largest fruit juice producers in China, Huiyuan Group.
Barriers of expectation, culture and language can slow things down. We have seen great results from these speed dating events in the past and would encourage both private sector companies and government agencies to run, sponsor or support similar meetings. This event is very special, giving UK and Chinese business leaders a regular opportunity to meet face to face. Only this type of dialogue builds the friendships and trust which lead to successful business collaborations that normally take years to achieve.

Trips are an important part of life at City. Our location allows us to not only take advantage of the myriad of opportunities within London, but also to a range of European countries and countries further afield. Below are some reviews from City staff and pupils from recent trips. The opportunity to discover a culture we previously knew nothing about, through visits to museums and tours of the vibrant villages surrounding Antigua and other towns such as Chichicastenango is truly once in a lifetime.
We will also never forget the children we met at the school we volunteered at during our two weeks stay; we really enjoyed teaching them English and spending time getting to know them. The best thing about the trip was that it combined daily Spanish lessons with volunteering and sightseeing, all of which together contributed to an amazing experience and it would not have been the same without the lovely families we stayed with, who made us feel so welcome.
I was able to greatly improve my language skills through immersing myself in the culture and I returned to the UK confident in my Spanish and eager to explore more of South America. We visited the sites, spent a day with our partner school, met our tour guide’s family, haggled at markets and struggled with transport. We found a matchmaker’s corner and joined in early morning dancing in a park.
We took pictures and had our pictures taken by curious onlookers…We do our best in the classroom when teaching languages to try and convey something about the culture of a country. But nothing beats the experience of being there. We tell them about the Chinese school day, the amount of homework, the pressure to succeed in the Gaokao; but nothing brings the message home like a conversation in a Chinese school with a Chinese student with a massive pile of textbooks in front of him experiencing those things.

Not everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel.
Why all of the tricks? The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:. Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common.

The event was primarily held at the Beijing National Stadium , which served as the athletics venue during the Summer Olympics.
